method costuming
We have developed a process and a philosophy called method costuming, loosely based on the actor's school of "method acting" -in development, design and construction you put yourself in the character's mindset, create a storyline which helps guide you in creating the costume and influences how you wear it.
The result is when you're making your costume you'll find yourself adding little touches otherwise overlooked. Making the costume personal to you adds something hard to describe yet produces a tangible effect on the workmanship of the costume.
Attention to detail : whether making your own or adapting already made objects it must belong to your character's costume
Distressing, destructing and aging: to make a believable costume it must look and feel like a real person or creature. Be true to the nature of your character, a warrior will have scarred and dented armor, a army on the march will be dusty and dirty, a evil queen can pull off jewels and gown while a pirate might sport the spoils of war but be grubby and worn. It can be difficult to distress and destruct-just like it sounds-it's beating up, marring the perfect finish, scratch and claw-something you poured so much time and effort on but the payoff is in how people -and you-will respond to the character when you wear it. A costume can be technically perfect but fade into the background...be the one that stands out.

don't forget the small stuff- buttons, beads, jewelry, belt buckles pouches- all help make the character more real- make these items from clay or resin in your own unique design
search ebay and thrift shops for that perfect piece
short on funds for leather? again to the resale and thrift shops for coats and jackets to take apart, even purses can give you enough material for trim
become familiar with your local hardware or home store, browse with a "costumers eye" I have picked up many things-rubber washers, wire, plastic hose, tubing and foam to name a few quite inexpensively that I incorporated into costumes designs
