eldar dire avenger
Dragoncon 2010
My costume for DragonCon*2010.
For those that play Warhammer 40k, it's an Eldar Dire Avenger.
For those who don't, it's a space elf.
I only had about 3 weeks to make this costume from concept to finish, so I'd say it is only 50% complete. I plan on redoing this costume (hence prototype) with much more detail sometime in the near future. Numerous props, such as a backpack and loincloth, were not finished in time. I think the Dire Avengers are the most visually engaging of the aspect warriors, which motivated me to make this costume. I also love the helmet. It's definitely the most enjoyable costume piece I've ever made.
The helmet and gun started as sheets of foamcore layered as sagittal slices (i.e. 5mm sections along the line of symmetry). They were then wrapped in sheets of fiberglass resin, coated with auto body filler, sanded down, painted with modge podge, wet sanded, spray painted, and coated.
The body armor is simply cut pads of packing foam and exercise mats covered in stretched nylon-lycra fabrics.
I got this particular photo from one of the great people at Obscurus Crusade, so credit goes to whoever took it.
