With the conventional definition of beauty in the media reduced to slim and toned bodies, it is no surprise that the majority of us are obsessed with our figures. There is however a worrying trend of most people opting for cosmetic surgery as an instant solution to getting the right body shape and size.
These solutions may seem magical but sometimes have very devastating side effects. Liposuction is a medical process of removing pockets of fat that are resistant to diets and exercise but it should not be viewed as a quick fix solution. There are also people who assume that it is a relatively easy procedure.
This assumption is misplaced because liposuction is a highly invasive process that requires the patient to stay in hospital or a private hospital like the North West Independent Hospital for a while and a general anaesthetic to be administered. Sometimes there can be significant swellings and also bruising accompanied by a painful recovery process. The final result can take time to be seen and in most cases four to six months for the swelling to go down.
People who opt for cosmetic surgery to get rid of excess fat may choose alternatives to liposuction for many reasons.
- This is because these alternatives may be less invasive and relatively simple. Most people dread the idea of being cut open and avoid it altogether when they can.
- Non-surgical procedures also have the appeal of being easy on the body. You avoid the bleeding, swelling and general pain that comes with the process of healing.
- The use of anesthetic always carries with it some potential risks and it’s best if it is avoided whenever possible.
- For non-surgical procedures, there is no need for a healing period since the process does not cause much pain to the body.
Some patients choose alternatives to liposuction because of the cost benefits.
Below are some of the alternatives to liposuction
- Liposonix Ultrasound
This is a non-surgical fat removal procedure, an alternative to the conventional suction-aided liposuction. The technique uses focused ultrasound with a high intensity to remove the fat. Liposonix does not involve any cutting because there is no use for the cannula. This procedure usually requires only a single session of treatment.
- Accent Ultra
This is a non-invasive procedure which aims to reduce excess body fat by using a combination of radio frequency and ultrasound energy. It attacks the pockets of fat deposits and reduces the visibility of cellulite with the end result being a more tightened and firmer body.
Before the commencement of the treatment, an aesthetic cream is usually applied on the area of the skin to be treated to reduce sensitivity or discomfort. This type of treatment can be used in the face and body contouring, fat removal, reshaping of the body and tightening of the skin. Normally four to eight visits are required to get excellent results.
This is a non-surgical procedure that strives to smoothen certain parts of the body and reduce the amount of cellulite present on them. This technique employs the use of massage and the power of ultrasound to heat the areas that have been targeted and take care of the underlying fatty tissues to bring out the desired results. It does not involve the use of anesthetic and is applied in two stages.
This is a type of non-invasive cosmetic procedure that removes excess body fat, treats skin laxity and limits the visibility of wrinkles. It involves the use of a very modern technology to achieve results. It uses a device which melts fat and tightens the skin simultaneously.
To achieve these effects, the device emits mono-polar radio frequency waves and ultrasounds which in turn will spark collagen growth. A normal operation takes approximately half an hour. To get the best results, 4-6 sessions of treatment are needed. The results can be noticed after two months.
It is used in facial treatments to tone and tighten loose skin. It is also touted to have a very short recovery period. This procedure uses radio frequency technology and only requires a single session of treatment. Thermage works by heating the deep layers of the skin while at the same time applying a cooling effect on the surface so as not to cause any harm to the external tissues. The heating stimulates the release of collagen thereby causing the skin to tighten. This method also liquefies some fat because of the heating by radio frequency waves.
In addition to these, there are still some methods such as Zerona, Tripollar, Venus Freeze, Coolsculpting and Vanquish which can still be used as alternative to liposuction.
